Sephardic Jewish Carvajal Family of Mexico

Like many students of northeastern Mexican genealogy, I came across the story of the Sephardic Jewish Carvajal family of Nuevo Leon as an undergraduate, and wanted to learn all I could about this family. Over the years, as an on-off again hobby, I have tried to go beyond the Inquisition documents and look at the genealogical record to determine if there were survivors and descendants. I think this is important given the Spanish/Mexican Inquisition's efforts to destroy this family in the late 16th and 17th centuries. While I am certainly not the first to research this family, I am not aware of any other researcher who has examined the genealogical record about descendants and posted the documentation online. Please add a comment if you have additional information or if you find an error.

  1. Great work. Are you a descendant of Catalina de Leon y la Cueva? I ask because Leonor (and Jorge de Almeida)left descendants and Anica, if my memory serves.

  2. Thanks. No, I'm not a descendant, I just have an interest in this family. A few years ago I compiled all this information, and I decided should put it online now to share with others and maybe get something started. Thanks for your comment!

  4. just wondering do you know who maria villegas's parents are. i want to see if they are possible ancestors of mines or least related to an nacestor of mine.

I have a triple-great grandma named bartola villegas, born in huejucar jalisco. i was able to trace her line up to a guy named agustin villegas and his wife rosalia enriquez born sometime before 1750, i'm not sure where they were born at though.

  5. I am a descendant of the Cavajal Family through the Sebag-Montefiore Family. My relatives interesting both on my Mother's side(Melamed was forced to convert to Christianity and take on the name Coronel). Rabbi Meir Melamed was the financier to Christopher Columbus and worked in the house or Arbarbanel(born in Segovia).

The Sebag-Montefiore Family is also a direct descendant of the Crvajal family who went to Mexico as well. Do you think there is a relation between the Melamed's and Cavajal's? My Father was born in Marrakesh but his family came from Spain and even Portugal as evidenced.

I would like to know more about the Cavajal Texas Connection. {lease e-mail me at danielonn2002@yahoo.com with all the history and information. Thanks.
