Lazaro Vela (Spanish Land Grantee, Porcion 57)

GENERATION 1
According to "Petra's Legacy: The South Texas Ranching Empire of Petra Vela and Mifflin Kennedy," by Jane Clements Monday and Frances Brannen Vick, Don Lazaro Vela, the son of Captain Francisco Vela and Maria Ortiz , was born 1721 in Cerralvo. He was granted Porcion 57 in the jurisdiction of Mier, Tamaulipas in what is now Starr County in 1767. He married Maria Antonia de la Garza (or Maria Antonia Garcia).

GENERATION 2
Maria Gertrudis Vela, daughter of Lazaro Vela and Maria Antonia de la Garza, married Juan Pantaleon Isaguirre (or Yzaguirre). According to "Petra's Legacy," Maria Gertrudis Vela's death record indicates that she died on 12 Aug 1789 at age 40 due to a poisonous snake bite, apparently a fact of life on the frontier.


GENERATION 3
Maria Antonia Yzaguirre, daughter of Juan Pantaleon Yzaguirre and Maria Gertrudis Yzaguirre, was born __________. She married Jose Miguel Ramirez (Agua Nueva de Arriba grantee), son of Jose Cristobal Ramirez and Maria Matiana Hinojosa on 08 Jan 1783 in Mier, Tamaulipas.

Nicanor Pineda, son of Pedro Pineda and Pioquinta Cardoza, married (1) Maria Antonia Minjares, daughter of Felipe Minjares and Natividad Godoy, on 04 Feb 1903 in Tlaltenango de Sanchez Roman, Zacatecas, Mexico. Thomas Robert Hale (Laredo Hale family founder)

Thomas Robert Hale, the progenitor of the Laredo Hale family, was born 07 Mar 1856 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, and died 11 Jan 1943 in Laredo, Texas. He married (1) Juana Fuentes on 07 Jan 1874, (2) Inez Arispe on 27 Feb 1884, and (3) Maria Garcia on _______. The only documentation about his father comes from the below 1874 marriage record, although oral history suggests that Tomas' father's name was James Hale, from County Sligo, Ireland


An ongoing discussion about our Hale roots is the possible connection to the Milmo family of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. The oral histories from various Hale descendants about such a connection suggests there is such a connection, either because Tomas' mother was a Milmo, or that Tomas had an illicit relationship with a Milmo daughter. In addition, there is one documented instance about such a connection, from an 1890 book entitled "The History of Sligo: Town and Country," by T. O'Rorke:

"Mr. Patrick Milmo, better known now through North and South America as Don Patricio Milmo, is one of the most prosperous and distinguished men that the parish of Ballysadare or the county of Sligo has ever produced. After serving an apprenticeship in the fine business house of Mr. M.J. Madden Camphill, he emigrated to Mexico, where his cousins, the Messrs. Hale, had long preceded him, and had formed a commercial firm second to none in that country. On his arrival, Mr. Milmo joined the firm, and his remarkable ability and energy developed and greatly extended the business."

Jose Miguel Ramirez (Spanish Land Grantee, Agua Nueva de Arriba)

GENERATION 1
Jose Miguel Ramirez, son of Jose Cristobal Ramirez and Maria Matiana Hinojosa, was born 12 Nov 1759 in Guerrero, Tamaulipas. He married Maria Antonia Yzaguirre, daughter of Jose Juan Pantaleon Yzaguirre and Maria Gertrudis Vela, on 08 Jan 1783 in Mier, Tamaulipas. He was granted Agua Nueva de Arriba by the Spanish Crown sometime between 1767-80. The grant, which is in today's Starr County, was 35,678 acres, according to Charles Weil v. Rosendo Martinez et al, 57 Tex. Civ. App. 440 (November 10, 1909). That case also suggests the disputed nature of the Nueces strip (the land between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande River) until the Mexican-American War of 1848. Specifically, the case shows that the Texas Legislature confirmed the grant on February 10, 1852, as opposed to doing so between 1836, when Texas won independence from Mexico and 1848. Later, according to the case, it appears there was a suit to partition this grant in 1902 in a Starr County district court in Lazaro Ramirez et al v. Manuel Guerra et al, cause no. 575.

Jose Miguel Tomas Ramirez, son of Jose Antonio Ramirez and Antonia Encarnacion Canales, was born 09 Mar 1830 in Mier, Tamaulipas. He married Maria Nemensia Garcia, daughter of Jose Clemente Garcia and Maria Petra Garcia, on 20 Oct 1853 in Mier, Tamaulipas.
